Club Information, In Brief
Arbroath Football Club came into existence in 1878 and they play their home games at Gayfield Park. This ground stands very close to the sea and waves can actually reach the stadium walls in bad stormy weather. This football ground is the closest to the sea in the UK. It has a capacity of 6,600 of which 861 are seats (2019). The club’s original pitch was close-by at Lesser Gayfield.
At home Arbroath play in maroon strips while they use a black strip when playing away. Their nicknames are The Red Lichties and The Smokies.
Perhaps their biggest claim to fame is for holding the world record for the biggest victory. This was when they beat Bon Accord 36-0 in a Scottish Cup game in 1885. There were also many offside goals as well. In that game, Jocky Petrie has the record of the most goals by a single player in the UK. Obviously those statistics are records in senior professional matches.
A Fine Club
Although Arbroath FC have not got too many honours to speak about, they have won many smaller cups. For example, they were the first team to win the Forfarshire Cup in 1883. The club must like that competition because they have won this cup 18 times in total (1995–96 was the last time).
The supporters share their fierce rivalry with Montrose FC. However, Arbroath have strong rivalries with Brechin City and Forfar Athletic too. Be that as it may, the club does have a loyal core of supporters. It is such a friendly club that away supporters mix and mingle while changing ends at half time with each other!
